The world is deeply concerned about biodiversity, endangered species, the balance of ecosystems, and the urgent need to save our planet. Conferences such as this are regularly convened to address these pressing issues.

Yet when we turn our attention inward, to our own social and intellectual environment, and particularly to education, we encounter a striking and, at the same time, alarming reality. We often forget that uniform school buildings do not, in themselves, constitute an education system, and that the key participants in education—teachers, learners, and curricula—are not mechanical components installed in those buildings. They are part of a living, breathing ecosystem.

There is a clear tendency on the part of the state to make all schools uniform and, consequently, easier to control. Yet in nature, as in education, one principle remains indisputable: monoculture leads to degeneration, whereas diversity sustains life and makes development possible.

1. Education as a Living Ecosystem

In nature, a forest is a living organism in which hundreds of species of plants, trees, and microorganisms are interconnected. If only one type of tree were left to grow there, the forest would lose its capacity for self-regulation and resilience. Or imagine an area where the natural chain has been disrupted and the elements that maintain its balance have disappeared: the system would inevitably move towards collapse.

In the same way, an education system cannot be viewed as a mechanical factory in which identical graduates are “manufactured.” A healthy educational landscape requires diversity: the coexistence of authorial, alternative, specialized, and conventional schools, as provided for under the Republic of Armenia’s Law on General Education. This diversity gives every child the opportunity to find their own ecological niche, where they can flourish and realize their full potential.

2. The Dangers of Monoculture and Bureaucratic Pressure

Today, one of the greatest threats to our education system, and one of the main obstacles to its development, is the drive towards uniformity—a form of educational monoculture. Centralized administration, the Ministry’s persistent attempts to “pull all the strings into one hand,” excessive control, and the imposition of uniform standards all seek to force schools into the same mould.

In agriculture, monoculture depletes soil fertility and leaves crops vulnerable at the first sign of disease. The same is true of education: when everything is subjected to rigid, uniform instructions and bureaucratic reporting requirements, creative thinking is stifled, and schools lose their distinctive identities.

3. Freedom and Community Trust

How can this system be healed? The answer is simple: control must give way to mutual trust. For an educational ecosystem to develop naturally and sustainably, freedom and school autonomy are essential, as is support for schools’ development from both state institutions and the educational community itself. Relationships between national and local authorities and educational communities must move away from an administrative, command-and-control model towards a culture of mutual assistance and trust.

When decision-making powers are entrusted to teaching communities and parents, the system becomes more resilient, more flexible, and better equipped to respond to the challenges of our time.

Conclusion: The Educational Ecosystem of the Future

This October, as Armenia hosts COP17, let us reflect not only on the green landscapes of our natural world but also on the ecosystem of our minds and our education. Protecting and supporting educational diversity—the coexistence of educational institutions implementing different educational programmes, including diverse school complexes—freeing them from bureaucratic constraints, and safeguarding school autonomy are essential guarantees of our country’s future, intellectual wealth, and sustainable development.

Let us reiterate: imposing uniformity in education increases the vulnerability of the system. A healthy educational ecosystem, by contrast, requires diversity in methods, approaches, ideas, and personalities.

Gevorg Hakobyan Introduction This October, Armenia is becoming the focus of global environmental attention as it hosts COP17.
